Emma Handley – Chief Executive Officer

Emma started at Citizens Advice over 20 years ago as a volunteer and completely fell in love with the service due to the real impact giving advice has on people.

This passion stays with her to this day as she has worked her way through many different roles in the service from adviser to CEO. Emma came to Plymouth in 2015 from South Hams and brought with her many years of experience in volunteer management, service design, financial management, project and contract management.

Emma has successfully delivered on cultural change and is a true believer in developing people in the organisation and empowering people that come to the Citizens Advice service for advice.

Daniel Gill

Daniel has been working for Citizens Advice Plymouth for the past six years and started his career as a debt caseworker supporting clients on our EDF Energy partnership.

Prior to joining Citizens Advice Plymouth Daniel was a National Customer Service Trainer for British Telecom and a Debt Expert within the customer service team at EDF Energy.

Daniel is now the Head of Utilities and manages our relationships with EDF Energy, OVO Energy, Bulb Energy and South West Water. The Utilities department consists of 40 dedicated individuals that provide Debt, Income Maximisation and Energy advice to clients that access our service.

Daniel specialises in developing national services that support vulnerable people to access the information they need. Daniel is very passionate about the energy sector and also specialises in the Warm Home Discount Industry Initiative, which plays a key part in the funding of our services at Citizens Advice Plymouth.

Daniel’s biggest achievement to date is leading our EDF Energy contract to be awarded the 2019 ‘Corporate National Partnership Champion’ by the Charity Times.

Emma Symonds

Emma has been working for Citizens Advice Plymouth for the past 4 years and started her career as Gateway and Advice Coordinator, managing the  day to day operations and workforce of the Citizens Advice Plymouth Core Service. 

Prior to joining Citizens Advice Plymouth Emma trained as a Secondary Physical Education Teacher where she went on to teach for several years. After a change in career path Emma then moved into the leisure industry where she undertook a management programme with Gala Bingo for 4 years before finally settling into Citizens Advice Plymouth. 

Emma is now the Head of Advice Services and manages our Core Services, including Reception, Gateway & Generalist Advice, also our relationships with National Citizens Advice for our Money Advice & Pensions Service (MAPS) and our Help to Claim Service including the Best Practice Lead Project, our relationship with Kay Kendall Leukemia Fund Project, as part of her role Emma is also our Quality Lead, ensuring….. Within her role Emma also manages our Research & Campaigns Team and Volunteer Development Team.

Emma is a passionate leader who specialises in managing & supporting people to ensure our client journey and service delivery not only ensure accessibility for our clients but also ensure that the advice we provide is at the highest quality. 

Gary Neeves

Gary joined Citizens Advice Plymouth in July 2015 as the Advice Plymouth Partnership Manager tasked with maintaining and developing the professional relationships between the four agencies involved in the partnership and Plymouth City Council. In addition to Advice Plymouth Gary currently has responsibility for the Pension Wise team and the development of the new Legal Advice project for the city.

Prior to working at Citizens Advice Plymouth Gary was a Police Officer in Devon and Cornwall for 25 years, working the last 10 years of his service in Plymouth as an Inspector in a variety of different roles. Before joining the police, Gary was in the Royal Navy for 9 years serving as a Medical Assistant on board HM ships and with the Royal Marines.

Gary remains committed about providing people with quality advice and information in order that that they can make informed decisions about whatever situation they face and is proud to work for Citizens Advice Plymouth.

Suzi Cumberland – Chief Operating Officer

Suzi Cumberland started working for Citizens Advice Plymouth in July 2017 as Business Manager and more recently has taken on the title of Chief Operating Officer, acting as deputy to the CEO.

Suzi is responsible for all operational functions of Citizens Advice Plymouth including ICT, Training, Marketing and Communications, Finance and Office Management.
Main tasks include the annual business planning cycle, project management of new and innovative developments and business risk management.

Prior to joining Citizens Advice Plymouth, Suzi worked as Head of Operations at Devon and Plymouth Chamber of commerce where her responsibilities included running several departmental areas including membership, events and finance.
However before civilian life, Suzi spent 10 years’ in the Royal Air Force serving as a logistics caterer. During her military career, Suzi was promoted to Deputy Mess Manager, had the privilege of serving several VIP’s including Her Majesty The Queen and in 2004 served in Op Telic, Basrah.
