We provide free, confidential and independent advice to help people overcome their problems. We are a voice for our clients and consumers on the issues that matter to them.

The main contact point for Citizens Advice is through our free Adviceline. Our skilled assessors will triage every client and provide information on how to resolve the issue.

If the client needs further advice or assistance, they will be signposted or referred to other services either internally, or externally to other organisations.

Advice Plymouth Drop in

Citizens Advice Plymouth and Improving Lives Plymouth work in partnership to provide quality
information and advice services across Plymouth.

Face to face help is available through a drop in service at Ernest English House.

The service is available 9.00am -4:15pm, Monday to Friday.

Legal Advice

We offer free legal advice for litigants in person with family law, employment, and housing. We
cannot advise clients if they are already instructing a solicitor or represent clients in court.

In partnership with University House Law Centre, we offer a oneoff 45-minute consultation with a solicitor conducted remotely (family law and employment only).

We also have in-house legal advisers who can provide advice and case support for clients.

Help to Claim

Help to Claim supports clients by completing and submitting applications for Universal Credit. The clients are supported until the first full payment. If other issues are identified, clients may be referred to other Citizens Advice services for further help.

Kay Kendall Leukaemia Fund

The project supports people from Devon and Cornwall affected by Leukaemia, their carers and anyone in the family. Our caseworkers can support in areas such as benefits, travel costs and applying for the KKLF grant.

Pension Wise is a government service from MoneyHelper that offers free, impartial guidance about defined contribution pension options for the over 50s. The session usually lasts 45-60 minutes, and advisers talk clients through their options to help them make the right decision.

The project supports EDF Energy customers who may be experiencing or at risk of fuel poverty or are in financial hardship. The project supports Utility Warehouse customers who may be experiencing or at risk of fuel poverty or are in financial hardship. Advisers and caseworkers provide holistic debt advice, including income maximisation, budgeting, benefit
eligibility, and energy efficiency. They can advise on eligibility and support with applications for a one-off payment of £150 (financial assistance scheme) or debt write-off through the Utility Warehouse Customer Support Scheme.

Yorkshire Building Society

One of our advisers is based in the Plymouth Yorkshire Building Society every Thursday, providing support with issues such as housing, employment, immigration, family and relationships, and benefits.

To book an appointment, clients can drop into the Yorkshire Building Society any time and ask to speak to the Citizens Advice Plymouth adviser who is there on Thursday.

The team will book them in for the next available appointment, which may be the following week if the current week is fully booked.

Chinese Community Project

We have funding to provide advice appointments in Mandarin or Cantonese to support Plymouth residents with issues like debt, housing, employment and more.  

The project can support clients face to face, over the telephone or by email.

Trussell Trust Oasis Foodbank

The project offers confidential advice on issues including debt, benefits and more, for people who are currently using or have recently used the Foodbank.   

Depending on the client’s circumstances, our adviser might book them in for a further appointment with Citizens Advice Plymouth, for more in-depth debt or other advice.  

To get advice, clients can visit the Trussell Trust Oasis Foodbank during the times listed below and ask to speak to the Citizens Advice Plymouth adviser.

Monday: 1.30pm – 3.30pm 

Wednesday: 10am – 3.30pm (closed between midday and 1.30pm) 

Friday: 11am – 1pm

Plymouth First Stop Shop

 

One of our advisers is based at the First Stop Shop every Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am – 4.30pm.

This referral only service offers confidential support on issues including debt, benefits and more to clients accessing the First Stop Shop for homelessness support from Plymouth City Council.

To get advice, clients receiving council homelessness support at the First Stop Shop can ask to be referred to the Citizens Advice Plymouth adviser who is there every Tuesday and Thursday.

This project offers confidential support with issues including benefits, debts and more to clients accessing the following Plymouth Food Co-ops.

Manadon Food Co-op Club

(the second Friday of every month, from 9.30am to midday)

Southway Food Co-op Club

(fortnightly on Tuesday, from 9.30am – 11am)

Mayflower and St James the Less Fruit and Veg Co-op

(the 3rd Friday of every month, from 1.30pm – 4pm)

To get support, clients can drop in and ask to speak to the Citizens Advice Plymouth adviser – no appointment needed.

Seetec

One of our advisers is based at Seetec every Tuesday and Thursday from 12.30pm – 4.30pm to provide confidential support with issues such as housing, employment, immigration, family and relationships or benefits to clients accessing Seetec.

Clients needing advice will be referred to our adviser by the Seetec team. If our adviser does not have any free appointments on the day, the team can book you in for the next available advice appointment.

Macmillan Project

In partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, this project offers free, confidential support to manage the financial diagnosis an impact can bring, such as reduction in income or additional costs like travel for appointments.

Money Advice

Our advisors can help clients explore their debt problem, look at ways of increasing income and reduce outgoings, and explain their options for dealing with debt.

Caseworkers may be able to take actions on behalf of the client with third parties, for example, challenge decisions or renegotiate a repayment plan.

Currently due to demand and the availability of Debt Caseworkers we have limited availability for debt advice. However, if we are unable to assist we will provide clients with alternative options for getting debt advice.
